Patriots come out victorious in Buffalo

Recap

After an embarrassing loss to Jacksonville last weekend, the Patriots needed a firm reset for the 2026 season. As the Patriots headed up to the new Highmark Stadium for the first time, it felt as if they were destined to lose. Instead, the Patriots came out of Buffalo with a statement win and rejuvenated energy. Drake Maye finally looked like his 2025 self again. He was able to throw comfortably and patiently in the pocket, even with two of his top receivers out injured. This game could be a big turning point for the 2026 Patriots season.

Drake Maye Looks Good

A 1-6 Touchdown/Interception ratio is not ideal for a starting quarterback in the NFL. Drake Maye had that ratio coming into Sunday’s game against the Bills. The weight of the Patriots fanbase was on his shoulders, and he delivered with a three-touchdown performance and a game-winning drive. This is one of Maye’s best games of his career and showed that he is capable of proving the doubters wrong. He was able to find 7 different receivers, including three of them notching 50 yards. Maye looked the most comfortable throwing to Romeo Doubs, who grabbed 6 catches for 58 yards and 2 touchdowns, with one of them being an amazing one-handed catch on thegoal linee. Now that the duo has a connection, they need to stay consistent.

While there are many good things that happened in the game, there are a couple of negatives to highlight. Drake Maye had yet another fumble while getting sacked, which is now his second of the season. His ability to hold onto the football is increasingly concerning each week. Maye might look good throwing the ball; it won’t matter if he continues to turn the ball over at this current rate. This needs more emphasis in practice to prevent it from happening in games.

Drake’s legs had a big involvement in the game as well. He ran the ball 8 times for 54 yards, including a 26-yard run that set up a Rhamondre Stevenson touchdown. Maye was able to scramble out of the pocket in stressful situations and come up big with first downs. He is currently second in the league in rushing yards for quarterbacks, just behind Ravens Lamar Jackson. It is a great sign to see Maye keep this part of his game, especially in meaningful moments during games.

The Receivers Stepped Up

With their number one receiver being out with an injury for the first month of the season, the Patriots receivers have been quite up and down. Coming into Week 4, Mack Hollins was the only consistent playmaker on offense. He seemed to always make a play when Drake Maye and the offense needed it most, and when he went out Sunday, the Patriots were without their best receiver on the field. With Hollins being out, Efton Chism III stepped up and delivered with two amazing catches on key plays, including a one-handed game-winning touchdown catch. He took the opportunity given to him, and he absolutely delivered.

Even though Hollins got injured, he still made meaningful plays. He was able to convert two third downs and average 17.7 yards per catch. His height and strength are two things that are able to separate him from the other receivers. While he now has a calf injury, Patriots Nation needs to hope that the injury won’t linger.

Defense Came Up Big

Going against a former MVP in Josh Allen is a big task. With the way he can sling the ball effortlessly and run like a running back, he is extremely dangerous on the field. But the defense was able to hang tough and prevent him from gaining a single yard on the ground. The secondary stayed strong even without Christian Gonzalez.

The safety tandem of Woodson and Byard has been coming on strong. Woodson grabbed his first career regular-season interception that sealed the game in the final two minutes. Kevin Byard also had a nice pass break-up against Dalton Kincaid. They patriots need these two to continue to play great while the cornerback room deals with injury.

The defensive line played their worst game of the season so far, but it was not all bad. They were able to hold James Cook of the Bills to 75 yards and the entire offense to 91 yards on the ground. The Patriots also need to improve on their third-down defense, as they allowed the Bills to convert 50% of the time on third down. Overall, the defense looked great against an MVP quarterback but now needs to stay consistent.

Back Home

The now 2-2 Patriots take on the Las Vegas Raiders, who are an impressive 3-1 to start the season. It is going to be a tough task going against a strong tight end tandem in Brock Bowers and Michael Mayer. The Patriots need to succeed in getting pass rush, continuing to stop the run attack, and having the offensive line hold up. It is going to be a good game between two even football teams.
