Who Maye Digg in yo Boutte Now?

On the afternoon of August 24th, 2026, ESPN’s assigned Patriots reporter Mike Reiss reported that the New England Patriots were trading third year wide receiver Kayshon Boutte to the Houston Texans for safety Jaylen Reed, and a seventh round pick (rumored to be 2028). This comes both as a surprise, and not, as Boutte had been linked to the Texans earlier in the month, given Houston’s dwindling WR supply. Seeing as this trade comes five days after the Texans’ Jayden Higgins was reported to have an ACL tear, and additionally following their acquisition of veteran Sterling Shepard, one must wonder how long these two teams have been in negotiations. Especially considering what appears to most Pats fans as an abysmal return.

Jaylen Reed is an unproven (admittedly due to Houston’s insane depth) safety who is likely to compete with Dell Pettus for the safety 3/4 spot, and Boutte himself was a sixth round pick in 2023. Following Boutte’s progression as a receiver after falling out of the limelight at LSU behind Justin Jefferson, it is difficult to see good value in a 2028 seventh rounder here. This is not to say, repeat the same argument the entire city has recently been engaged with following the Jaylen Brown trade (separate topic), but the questions linger: Is New England too attached to their drafted players? Is the rest of the country just fleecing our front offices after so many years of Belichick and Brad Stevens dominance? Will Justin Herbert ever win a playoff game? Only time will tell.

This marks the departure of (arguably) Drake Maye’s first real WR connection (no offense Pop Douglas), closely following the post-season departure of Stefon Diggs as well. There is also some humor in that Drake Maye’s first TD came on a long pass to Boutte against the Texans in 2024, and that a similar strike delivered a dagger in 2025s AFC semi-finals game against the Texans again. Perhaps Houston’s front office sees Boutte as an increasing threat to their Super Bowl aspirations and have concluded that their only hope for success is to control him as part of their roster. There is little doubt that Maye will adjust accordingly to his new talent in recent acquisitions AJ Brown and Romeo Doubs, but the loss of such an iconic pre-game question “Maye I Digg in yo Boutte” will surely be felt every sunday for the next 17 weeks.

Our best hope of even remotely replicating such a lofty Beacon Hill utterance relies on a depth chart breakout for rookie Kyle Dixon. We could then ask if “Maye Doug yo Brown Dixon”. Not nearly as charming.
